Dear YUSA Members:
As previously reported , on July 19th, the YUSA Bargaining Committee provided York University (“the Employer”) with our notice of intent to bargain. The Employer’ responded that they would begin negotiations in mid-September. We reminded the Employer that the Labour Relations Act requires the parties to meet within 15 days of the notice of intent to bargain being provided and we requested earlier meeting dates. The employer has agreed to convene a one hour preliminary meeting tomorrow (August 14, 2024).
We will update the membership after this meeting regarding our next steps in the bargaining process.
We continue to pay close attention to the negotiations between the Employer and the York University Faculty Association (YUFA). The Employer called for a "no-board,” and YUFA members have responded strongly, with 92.3% voting in favour of a strike mandate. YUFA and the Employer continue to meet and bargain with the help of a mediator, however, because the no-board has been issued, a strike or lockout could still occur at any time.
Given the employer’s hardline approach with YUFA, it’s likely we will be in for a challenging round of negotiations. We encourage members to show their solidarity with YUFA, including signing a petition of support.
