Dear YUSA Member,
Last week the YUSA Bargaining Committee met with the Employer for our first two days of negotiations (September 17th and 19th). Both YUSA and the Employer shared their initial packages of proposals at these meetings.
YUSA has provided the Employer with proposals that address various non-monetary articles within the Collective Agreement. These proposals introduce language to provide new or greater rights in areas that members have expressed concern over, such as stronger language regarding remote work and workload, increasing your protection from harassment/discrimination, improving health & safety, including physical safety in the workplace, and provisions to protect YUSA jobs from being replaced by artificial intelligence.
Similar to the previous round of bargaining, the Employer has presented proposals that would reduce rights; these proposals include:
- Allowing your manager to book you off on vacation without your consent under certain circumstances, and requiring that you use all your vacation time in the year it is accrued.
- Capping the number of sick days you can accrue and limiting the number of sick days you can use to take care of a sick family member.
- Allowing unlimited numbers of co-op students and interns to perform your YUSA bargaining unit work.
- Weakening your internal job posting rights and adding restrictions on when members in continuing positions can take temporary positions.
These are only a few of the numerous concessionary proposals that the Employer has shared so far.
As is customary, neither YUSA nor the Employer have shared any monetary proposals (salaries, benefits, etc.) at the outset of negotiations. Typically the parties deal with non-monetary issues first and we will be moving on to monetary proposals at a later stage.
