Bargaining Update Progress Report & Upcoming Events banner

Hello fellow YUSA Members:

Since the update on November 28, your Bargaining Committee met with the Employer on November 29 and December 9 & 10.

Employer has applied for conciliation

Yesterday the Employer notified YUSA it will be requesting the appointment of a conciliator despite not yet having received YUSA’s monetary proposals. This means a conciliator will assist the parties in bargaining, and brings us one step closer to a potential no board, strike or lockout.

Remaining Concessionary Proposals - What’s at stake?

  • limiting the number of sick days you can use for sick dependents to 10 days per year
  • limiting the notice period to only 30 days for a change in your working hours (you currently get two months notice)
  • making it easier for the university to hire external candidates instead of current YUSA members, and making it more difficult for you to move into another role at York
  • providing a winter break shorter than all other universities in Toronto, requiring you deplete your vacation bank
  • hiring unlimited numbers of co-op students who can perform your work

Monetary Proposals

On December 10, the Employer presented a new comprehensive package which included their complete monetary proposals including benefits and salaries.

Employer proposes reductions to your benefit entitlements:

  • Limiting your claims for physiotherapy to a maximum of $1,000 per year. (You presently have unlimited physiotherapy coverage)

  • Requiring all paramedical services (psychologist, physiotherapist, massage, chiropractic, etc.) to be subject to unspecified “Reasonable and Customary Provisions” imposed unilaterally by Sun Life which will set maximum amounts for reimbursement for each and every claim you make. This change may result in you having to pay a portion of each claim out of pocket.

University offers YUSA lower salary increases than YUFA and CUPE 3903

The following salary increases have been proposed by the Employer:

2024- 2.1%

2025 - 1.85%

2026 - 1.85%

This means the Employer is offering you significantly lower salary increases than what both CUPE 3903 and YUFA received in 2024 (3.1%; 2.85%; 2.85%).

What now?

Now more than ever, you and your colleagues must come together in solidarity to show this Employer that you will not accept cuts to your benefits or insultingly low wage increases. In response, YUSA will call a strike mandate vote to show this Employer that you will not accept an unfair deal.

YUSA’s bargaining task forces will meet to discuss strike preparedness and planning.  Expect to receive a call or email from YUSA volunteers about what’s at stake. Stay tuned for more information about forthcoming YUSA townhalls.
