Benefits

The Employer is proposing significant cuts to your paramedical benefits coverage, despite agreeing to benefits related increases for both YUFA and CUPE 3903 earlier this year.

What's at stake?

Your benefits form an important part of your compensation at York University. The Employer is proposing significant cuts to your paramedical benefits coverage even though earlier this year both YUFA and CUPE 3903 were able to negotiate increases to their benefits or other related funds.

What is the Employer proposing?

Your coverage for physiotherapists is currently unlimited, however the employer is proposing to limit this coverage to $1000 per year.

Agreeing to any cap on a currently unlimited item (such as physiotherapy) would mean less coverage for you now AND we would have to fight to increase this cap in every future year of bargaining.

The Employer is also seeking to impose new "reasonable and customary" limits on all of our paramedical coverage (psychologist, physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage, etc.) which would mean that you could have to pay out of pocket for a portion of every claim you submit for these expenses even if you have not hit the limit for that covered service. This also means that Sun Life gets to unilaterally decide what is "reasonable" for each and every paramedical claim you submit and they can deny part of that claim if they choose.

What is YUSA proposing?

Among other items, YUSA will be proposing adding coverage for psychotherapists and social workers in addition to our current registered psychologist coverage. We believe this represents a win-win for both members and the employer as these services typically cost less for the employer but are more accessible for our members.

What can I do?

Vote YES for a strike mandate and
STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS

The cost of paramedical services have gone up, not down, so you and your colleagues MUST VOTE YES FOR A  STRIKE MANDATE and tell this employer that you won't accept reductions to your benefits package. You deserve fair increases just like the other workers on campus!

What’s at Stake? Benefits. The Employer is proposing significant cuts to your paramedical benefit coverage, despite agreeing to benefit related increases for both YUFA and CUPE 3903. A proposal imposing new ''reasonable and customary'' limits on your paramedical coverage (psychologist, physiotherapist, etc.) may cause you to pay any differential out-of-pocket. In this case, Sun Life unilaterally decides the ''reasonable limit''.
